I know it's been 3 months I said that I will post up a blog on my new house. I will definately do it in my next blog (if I'm not lazy).
This is a story I wanted to share. On Monday, 13 October 2008, I went for an interview at one of the chain restaurant in Queensbay Mall for the position of Outlet Chef. They are expanding their outlets in Times Square and Gurney Plaza. Currently they had another one in Auto City.
So, when I arrived at the outlet, the operation manager gave me a job application form to fill up. I went to one corner and sat there quitely filling up the form with all my particulars. After 10 minutes later, the operation manager came over and started interviewing me. Asking me all sort of quaestions like I'm applying for a position of general manager. For goodness sake, it's just an outlet chef lah. Carry on, after all the questioning, he was happy with my answer and I'm satisfied with the answer that i gave him.
So, the operation manager started telling me the history of the restaurant and that I can't do much with the menu because it's all been standardize from another country. I understand that because it's a chain restaurant mah. And he continued saying that I still can come out with a lot of special menus for valentine's day, x'mas day and so on. I'm happy to hear that. I have the confident that I'm getting the job. On the spot, the operation manager told me that I'm shortlisted.
Here comes the best part. Now, we are negotiating about the salary. He look at my application form, the salary corner and got a shock when I asked for that much of money. He told me that he can't pay me that much. I asked him how much can he pay me? RM2000 he said. Hahahaha.... WTF... For that salary, how am I going to survive? I told him no, it's too low. He looked at me for a second and said, ok RM2100. That RM100 i can finish it off in 1 bloody week. What's good with the additional of RM100. Then he asked me am I married. What is the pay got to do with married or not? I told him yes sarcasticly, I'm married to my car for almost 3 years now. Does that count? He started to tell me his granfather story, "young man, don't look at the money. Look at your future. Do you know that when I'm in the states I'm getting USD5000 and when i come back to Malaysia and getting only RM5000?" Is it my F@#*ING problem you are getting that much. Why come back to Malaysia than? Who don't look at money? So, i told him that, if you can't pay, then forget about it.
The next day, the operation manager rang me up asking me if I'm still interested in the job. I told him no unless you pay what I'm asking for. So, he started to make the last negotiation saying that he fought for me to the management. I was happy to hear that and i thought that I can get what I'm asking for. When he said that he can pay me RM2400, I put down the phone without saying anything.
Moral of the story. Stand firm on what you do and what you wanting to do. If you think that you are worth that much, don't be afraid to demand. If they can't give, forget about it.
